"Quotation Marks"

 

Use QUOTATION MARKS to enclose a direct quotation.  Whenever you quote exactly what someone says—that is a direct quotation. Use a “ mark at the beginning of the quote and a “ at the end of the quotation.  NOTICE: punctuation goes inside the quote marks.

EXAMPLES:

Jason shouted, “I won’t do the work because I’m busy!”

“Is anyone interested in the last piece of cake?” asked my mother.

 

ONLY USE QUOTATION MARKS FOR WORDS THAT ARE DIRECTLY SAID BY SOMEONE.

 

Use SINGLE QUTATION MARKS for a quote that comes inside a quote.  NOTE: a single quotation mark is an apostrophe.

EXAMPLE:

“I love to read ‘The Path not Taken’ by my favorite poet Robert Frost,” said Hector.

 

When using DIALOGUE, every time the speaker changes. 

EXAMPLE:

“Where is the hammer?” asked my brother.

Susie answered him, “I don’t have a clue, and I don’t really care.”

“Not nice!” retorted my brother.

 

Use QUOTATION MARKS around title and short works likes song titles, poems, articles, essays, etc.

EXAMPLES:


“There Will Come Soft Rains”

I like the poem, “Stopping By the Woods on a Winter Evening”.

 

Use a QUOTATION MARKS to enclose slang words.

EXAMPLES:

The word “hokey” is an old word that means strange.

Don’t be such a “dud”.
