SOUND SENTENCES ONE
Fragments
A sentence is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and makes sense. Sometimes when a person writes a sentence they do so too fast. Because the writer did not take enough time, the result could be a sentence fragment. Consider a fragment to be a broken part of sentence. In order for it to function as a full sentence, what is broken (the fragment) must be fixed.
A sentence fragment is a piece of a whole sentence. Sentence fragments do not make sense by themselves.
An EXAMPLE of a phrase fragment:
Into the large attic over my bedroom.
This is NOT a sentence! This is a sentence fragment (phrase fragment actually). NOTICE that this fragment does not have a subject or a verb, and it DOES NOT make any sense whatsoever.
An EXAMPLE of a clause fragment:
Because he called me at home.
This is not a sentence! This is a clause fragment. (Yes, it does have a subject and a verb, but it DOES NOT make any sense.
All fragments (phrase or clause) can be turned into a complete sentence by including what is missing. Fix what is broken by adding what is needed to end up with a sentence that makes sense and contains a subject and a verb.
Examples of fixed fragments:
Because he called me at home, I got the news first. This is now a sentence. You now have a subject and a verb. As a result of adding a subject and a verb (you really added an independent clause to a subordinate clause), you have fixed what was once a clause fragment.
I took the boxes up into the large attic over my bedroom. This is now a sentence. With the addition of subject and a verb, a sentence has been created that makes sense.
